DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Malaysia: can’t beat the view
UPDATED 6.2019
Please check my previous update to understand the methodology and the reasons for these updates. In brief, I intend to keep updating these posts periodically or after every devaluation to document never-ending Hilton Honors “enhancements.” Look for red ink for the latest updates.

UPDATE 9.30.18:
Hilton has drastically raised the redemption prices at many of its properties. I thoroughly revised this post to include the latest changes. When you see red type face, it means the price has increased.

Hilton Garden Inn Tangier — from 10,000 Hilton Honors points
How can you go wrong with this hotel? You can’t. This very well reviewed property is located just one minute from the beach, and it will be walking distance from a high-speed train station when that starts operating (presumably this summer). In addition, the hotel’s cash price can run from $80 to $200, so it’s a good deal any way you’re looking at it.

Salalah
Hilton Salalah Resort 10K per night -> UPDATE 9.30.18: 20K -> UPDATED 6.19: 30K

Hilton Salalah
At the beginning of 2018, Hilton raised the price of this hotel from 5,000 points to 10,000, then to 20,000 points, and now to 30,000. In the course of 1.5 years or less, Hilton has raised the redemption rates for this hotel by 600%!

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Aqaba — from 20,000 Hilton Honors points
Red Sea, anyone? This 5-star hotel is located in the business district, but it’s within walking distance from the beach. Rooms start at $60+ from what I can tell.
ASIA
MALAYSIA
You can build a whole itinerary around cheap Hilton hotels in Malaysia. I’ve only been to Kuala Lumpur, but from what I’ve been reading, all of these cities are worth visiting, for different reasons.
Kuala Lumpur
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur 10K per night -> UPDATED 4.19: 17K to 20K -> UPDATED 6.19: 20K
At 10K per night, DT Kuala Lumpur used to be the best bargain in Asia. I would still stay there if only for a fantastic breakfast and close proximity to the Petronas Towers, but probably not on points — Kuala Lumpur hotels are cheap and this DT often costs around $70.
Don’t believe anyone who tells you that Kuala Lumpur isn’t worthy of your time. It totally is, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially when I ventured beyond the Petronas Towers. The hotel review is here (breakfast is amazing, easily one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had anywhere in the world).
Johor Bahru
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru 10K per night -> UPDATE 9.30.18: 20K

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru, Malaysia — 20,000 Hilton Honors points
Johor Bahru is Malaysia’s second biggest city and it’s the home to Legoland, Malaysia, the Angry Bird park, Sanrio Hello Kitty Town, and other theme parks (in case your kids get hopelessly bored). Johor Bahru also has beaches, islands, waterfalls, and other attractions, but it’s mostly known as a gateway to Singapore – it’s actually very popular with Singaporeans as a weekend destination.
I was researching Johor Bahru as a cheap way of exploring Singapore, but decided it would be too much of a hustle, and stayed at Conrad, instead. 🙂 It may be fine for a one-time foray into Singapore, but probably not for traveling daily – at least, until the construction of the international subway line between the countries is completed, presumably by 2022. If you want to stay in Singapore, a better choice would be Hilton Garden Inn Singapore Serangoon for 20,000 points in Little India. Not anymore (keep reading).
Kuching
Hilton Kuching 10K per night

Hilton Kuching — 10,000 Hilton Honors points
A reader recommended this Borneo city to me, and having done some research, I agree, it’s worth seeing, especially in that the Hilton there costs only 10,000 points a night. However, this Hilton often sells just for $50+, and while this is within my valuation parameters, don’t forget that the cash rate can earn you up to 14 points per $1 with the right (Aspire) card.
Melaca
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Melaka 10K per night (UPDATE 9.18: 19K to 20K) -> UPDATED 4.19: 14K to 20K -> UPDATED 6.19: 18-20K

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Melaka — from 5,000 to 20,000 Hilton Honors points in 1 year!
Melaca (also spelled Malacca) is the oldest city in Malaysia, and Melaca’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also has some beaches and it’s quite close to Kuala Lumpur – just 1.5 hours by cab. Just at the beginning of 2018, this hotel cost 5,000 points. Then they increased it to 10,000, but that still wasn’t good enough. Here is the new unofficial Hilton “Flexing” motto: “Go big or go home.”
Penang
DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang 10K per night

DoubleTree by Hilton Penang — 10,000 Hilton Honors points
I mentioned this hotel in my Resorts post here. The hotel looks quite nice and offers a free shuttle to Georgetown, yet another UNESCO World Heritage site. Penang is also home to one of the most intricate and important Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia – Kek Lok Si Temple, or the Temple of Supreme Bliss. The DoubleTree cash rates start around $60+.
SINGAPORE
Hilton Garden Inn Singapore Serangoon for 20K points -> UPDATED 6.19: 30K
INDONESIA
Kuta
Hilton Garden Inn Bali Ngurah Rai Airport 5K per night

Hilton Garden Inn Bali Ngurah Rai Airport Hotel — 5,000 points
OK, so I never (well, almost never) recommend airport hotels, but this one I stayed at for my first and last day in Bali. Despite its proximity to the airport (and despite not being upgraded), the hotel is central enough to serve as a destination hotel to explore the island. The hotel has a resort feel, and while very close to the airport, it’s also a short and cheap ride away from the beaches and nightlife. The rates start at $55+, so you’re getting quite a deal for 5,000 Hilton Honors points. Enjoy it while it lasts. Something tells me that in their never-ending quest “to deliver the best value” Hilton is going to “enhance” it soon enough.
VIETNAM
Hanoi
Hilton Garden Inn Hanoi 10K per night
My cousin Timmy stayed in this hotel, so I visited it on a couple of occasions. It’s very centrally located (unlike JW Marriott where I was staying), and it’s a typical clean and efficient Garden Inn. The rates seem to range from $60 to $100. Excellent redemption!
Hilton Hanoi Opera: 19-23K per night -> UPDATED 4.19: 24K to 30K -> UPDATED 6.19: 32K to 40K

Hilton Hanoi Opera — from 17,000 points
This is obviously a more upscale property, which is also close to the Old Quarter, but depending on your dates, you might be able to snatch a room for $80-$100. This is yet another hotel that has become unreasonably expensive on points.
CHINA
Beijing
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Beijing 20K per night -> UPDATED 4.19: 25K to 30K -> UPDATED 4.19: 30K

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Beijing — now 30,000 points
This centrally located 5-star hotel used to be a good value for the money Hilton Honors points. Oh well!
Let’s recap
UPDATED 6.19
- Hilton Garden Inn Tangier City Center has increased by up to 8K (32%)
- Hilton Salalah Resort — by 10K (600% since 2018)
