The Peak / Off-Peak Hyatt Points Calendar: Here Are the Negatives and Sweet Spots in the Most Detailed Analysis You’ve Seen So Far

Facebooktwitterrss

The new Hyatt’s Points Calendar is now prominently displayed on every Hyatt.com hotel website and the reactions from the blogosphere are mostly negative. There is a good reason for that. Actually more than one reason.

  • In general, Hyatt stays have become more point-expensive during the times most people want to visit (not that we didn’t expect it, though).
  • The ratio of Off-Peak to Peak dates at some hotels is extremely low (some hotels have no Off-Peak dates at all).
  • Hyatt often “surrounds” an Off-Peak date with a sea of Peak and Standard days, which doesn’t help.
  • There is often no rhyme or reason for Peak / Off-Peak dates since they don’t reflect the corresponding cash prices (although that can sometimes be advantageous for us, too).
  • The calendar does NOT reflect real availability. There is nothing that prevents an individual property from blocking redemptions for any room or suite on any Standard, Off-Peak, or even Peak dates.

My first impression of the Hyatt Points Calendar is… complex?

Now, I’ve got to say I did have a little advantage.

Rather than relying on checking one or a few random Hyatt properties, I had access to my own recent research into Hyatt Categories 1-4 international hotels. And if you know my blogging style, I dig deep. I love working with data because, seriously, until you’ve cracked numbers for a few dozen properties you don’t know much.

There is a limitation to my analysis, however. I’ve only explored international hotels. Things might or might be not different for U.S. Hyatt properties.

So how do I see the new changes? As a mix of good and bad with a splash of ugly thrown in for [not-so] good measure. Unfortunately, this splash of ugly combined with the bad outweighs the good.

That means, basically, that just like everyone else out there I wish these changes didn’t happen.

Still, the Hyatt Points Calendar has created some new sweet spots

Having said that, Hyatt has delivered some really good values with their Off-Peak dates, too. And when I say this, I don’t mean only “secondary” destinations in good travel  seasons and primary destinations in bad ones. It was surprising to me (in a good way) that I might be able to score better now where I want to go when I want to go.

However, for every sweet spot created by the Hyatt Calendar, there is such a “little thing” as actual availability. For example, hotels can easily “disappear” award availability not just for rooms, but also for suites whenever they feel like it, and we know they’ve done that before (hello, Park Hyatt Zanzibar and countless others). So when you see a good Off-Peak redemption I suggest booking sooner rather then later because we all know how it works. 🙂

As a reminder, here is my previous research for Best Hyatt Categories 1-4 international hotels.

And now let’s dig in!

There are nice Off-Peak clusters in March (projected Sakura blossom), as well as May, June and mid-July. And you can get a fabulous suite for a song (from 11,500 points for a huge harbor-view suite with Club access).

Hyatt Regency Osaka Standard Suite with Club Access can be yours for 11,500 points Off-Peak

Hyatt Category 3 Points Changes

  • Standard Rooms: 12,000 points / Peak 15,000 points / Off Peak 9,000 points

  • Club: 17,000 points: / Peak 20,000 points / Off Peak 14,000 points

Hyatt Regency Vancouver: Standard / Peak / Off-Peak days

Well, let me save you and myself some trouble. There is a great Standard / Off-Peak availability in March, April, October and November. June, July and August are completely Peak months (if you don’t count two days in August), while May and September are a mix of Standard and Peak, but predominantly Peak. So, there. If you must visit Vancouver in the summer it’s a huge devaluation for you.

Andaz Vienna

Andaz Vienna, on the other hand, is a win. There is a great mix of Standard / Off-Peak dates in March through May, summer and fall are completely Standard, with an exception of three days at the end of the calendar in November. A complete opposite to HR Vancouver!

Hyatt Centric The Liberties Dublin

Standard 12,000 points every day until the end of schedule (at the time of writing).

Hyatt Centric Murano Venice: Standard / Peak / Off-Peak number of days

  • March: 11 / 2 / 18
  • April: 17 / 12 / 1

  • June: 2 / 28 / 0
  • July: 18 / 11 / 2
  • August: 10 / 1 / 20
  • September: 2 / 28 / 0
  • October: 6 / 26 / 0
  • November: 5 / 2 / 23
Sweet spots

August is hot and very busy in Venice, but look at the bright side. If you must visit a world-class destination with kids in tow (meaning in summer), this is a bargain for 9,000 points. It’s actually a bargain for a standard 12,000 points, too, unless the cash price is low.

Park Hyatt Siem Reap

Here is the deal. The summer is awash in Off-Peak dates, and by summer I mean May through October. March is almost completely Standard; April is 3/4 Standard, and November is a an almost equal mix of Standard and Peak (with the second half of the month being predominantly Peak). We don’t know the deal for the next winter yet, but it doesn’t look good. 🙁 Still if you’re willing to brave the hit, you can get one of their awesome Premium Suites with a private pool or garden for only 18,000 points.

Hyatt Regency Hua Hin

This hotel certainly looks like a winner. While Off-Peak clusters abound every month, I’ve counted only 19 Peak days from March to the end of schedule in November. Of course, Thailand gets super hot in summer (although, in all honesty, when is it not?) and we can’t see what the 2022/2023 winter is going to look like, but for now it really looks good. Here is March 2022.

Sweet spots

There are two large Off-Peak clusters in March and November when the heat might not be too oppressive. And don’t hesitate to splurge on a 1,500 Premium Ocean View Suite that comes with a Jacuzzi, Club access and free daily massages, which can be yours for 18,000 points. Heaven!

  • Standard Suites: 24,000 points / Peak 27,000 points / Off Peak 21,000 points
  • Premium Suites: 30,000 points / Peak 36,000 points / Off Peak 24,000 points

Sweet spots

Definitely August with fairly large Off-Peak clusters. And its Premium Ambassador suites (24,000 points Off-Peak) feature outdoor Jacuzzis.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar: Standard / Peak / Off-Peak number of days

  • March: 26 / 3 / 2
  • April: 25 / 1 / 4
  • May: 11 / 2 / 18
  • June: 22 / 0 / 8
  • July: 24 / 7 / 0
  • August: 17 / 14 / 0
  • September: 16 / 7 / 7
  • October: 23 / 2 / 6
  • November: 10 / 0 / 20
Sweet spots

There are small 2-3 days Off-Peak clusters in June and September. The month of May looks better, but it’s reportedly a rainy time in Zanzibar.

Hyatt Centric Melbourne

Hyatt Centric Melbourne is predominantly Standard throughout the year with just a few Peak dates in March, October and November. There are no Off-Peak dates, not even one.

Park Hyatt Saigon: Standard / Peak / Off-Peak number of days

  • March: 20 / 11 / 0
  • April: 28 / 2 / 0

  • September: 10 / 6 / 14
  • October: 16 / 7 / 8
  • November: 10 / 9 / 11
Sweet spots

There are plenty of Off-Peak dates except August, and there are nice 3+ days clusters too. Just avoid weekends if you can; it seems like all Saturdays at Great Hyatt Jeju are Peak-priced throughout the year. And even standard suites in this hotel are nothing short of spectacular!

21,000 points Off-Peak can buy you this huge Standard Suite with Club Access at Hyatt Regency Jeju

Hyatt Regency Tokyo Bay: Standard / Peak / Off-Peak days

Sweet spots

There are nice Off-Peak clusters there in March (sakura blossom season) and June, which is a great time to visit Tokyo.

To recap

Most bloggers hate the Hyatt’s new Peak / Off-Peak calendar, and it’s easy to see why. It certainly devalues most awards cherished by most people: upscale properties in world-class destinations during the busiest travel times of the year.

However, the new Hyatt calendar has also delivered surprising values I’m sure not many of us were expecting. Hyatt Regency Belgrade, a Category 1 hotel, has some Off-Peak dates in summer 2022. Ditto for Hyatt Regencies Manchester, Paris, Berlin, Osaka and Tokyo, as well as Grand Hyatt in Jeju. There are fantastic Off-Peak calendars in August at Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile and Hyatt Centric Murano Venice. And some hotels remain Standard for the vast majority of the year, like Hyatt Regency Merida, Hotel Arima & Spa, San Sebastian and Story Hotel Signalfabriken, part of JdV by Hyatt, Stockholm, to name a few.

Unfortunately, some hotels are getting more peak dates during high-traveled periods. Those include but are not limited to Hyatt Regency Vancouver, Hyatt Centric Milan Centrale and Park Hyatt Siem Reap.

How representative is this slice of Hyatt properties in regard to the general picture? I have my theories, but don’t know the answer yet. Tell you what, though, I’ll keep checking out other higher categories and see where it leads me.  One conclusion so far, is that unlike Marriott (and every single hotel chain before it) World of Hyatt has been very careful trying to limit the damage. 🙂 It’s still the best hotel program bar none; we just need to use their points even more strategically from now on.

What’s your reaction to the Hyatt changes? Happy, indifferent, totally pissed off? Please share in the comments.
