LAN (LATAM after merger with Brazilian TAM) is the largest airline conglomerate in South America. It practically owns the sky over the continent. In addition, their planes are great in terms of comfort and amenities–much better than a typical US airline with better leg space, better food and personal entertainment system even in economy on a long-distance flights.
LAN regularly often unbeatable prices to Latin America from the US. As far as free travel goes, 48,000-50,000 LANPASS Kilometers will take you all the way to Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and a few other countries, as well.

If you have to deal with them beyond booking an award, prepare to be patient. I have never had a problem with LAN, but I know people who have, and it wasn’t pretty. That’s all I’ll say for now:-).
