In a surprising announcement on November 12, American and US Air declared that they had come to the agreement with the Department of Justice to settle (as DOJ put it) “Merger Challenge.” The agreement arrived on the same very day the DOJ announced that “the Justice Department Requires US Airways and American Airlines to Divest Facilities at Seven Key Airports.” Apparently, both airlines couldn’t run fast enough to sign on the dotted line.
Why was it so surprising, you ask? Because only a week ago, DOJ announced the mediation hearing set on November 25. One—if one was is as naïve as I am—couldn’t help but ask what the rush is. Read more
