The Definitive Guide to Gaming Spirit. Part 2: In-Depth

This post is going to be long. Please be patient. If you really want to learn how to game this uber-sneaky airline, you will have to learn a thing or two. Better yet, bookmark this page and use it as a reference.

My previous post is here:

The Definitive Guide to Gaming Spirit. Part 1: Intro and Easy 8,000 Points

By the way, my 8,000 miles have been posted since then.

Spirit Air Free Spirit frequent flyer program is region-based (4 regions). It used to have a very user-friendly redemption interface, whereas you would pick your departure city, and the chart would nicely list all the city within every zone and give you the levels you would pay. However, since their network has grown so dramatically in the last few years, they have decided to give all that profit to some cretins web designers, who have made everything confusing as hell. The end result is this.

Spirit Stupid Chart

Yeah, I know, good luck with that! Especially considering that some airports that Spirit serves are not even there, like Houston, for example. My list below is more accurate, so you might consider using that instead, but only for non-stop flights!

Before we proceed, let’s agree on a few things. If you do not want to get BoA Free Spirit credit card, you should stop reading now. Just forget Spirit altogether and save yourself a lot of aggravation. You will thank me later.

Second, even though Free Spirit is very capacity controlled, you must treat the following table as  a rough guide of what to expect, and not the last word. In many cases you can still find off-peak redemption rates when you expect them the least, so keep checking. Yes, I know its’ not updated, but like I said: rough guide.

Spirit Season

Third, people who keep telling you that Spirit miles are “useless” either repeat what they’ve heard, or they are complainers who would have a problem with any frequent flyer program. If you have made it this far, you already know that in order to fly for free, you must be flexible on your dates or your destinations–otherwise, you shouldn’t be playing this game.

Now that we’ve got this issue out of the way, let’s see our options. Below you will find the list of the US cities and their off-peak redemptions rates for all corresponding non-stop flights (one way). Why non-stop?

Because like British Airways Avios, Spirit miles offer the best possible redemptions for direct, non-stop flights. Although, just like with Avios, there are exceptions, as well.

I hope you recognize the value when you see it. If you are flexible and not a snob, you can make like a bandit with Spirit. In my next and final post, I will talk about some more tricks and sweet spots in the Free Spirit  program, as well as about certain things you might wish to avoid.
