The unprecedented and spectacular Sony PlayStation security breach in 2011 that affected almost 80 million Sony users displayed what could only be construed as nothing short of inaptitude. In Sony’s own words, “the personal data table… was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.”

Wait. What? Why? Why would Sony not have encrypted sensitive user data? Isn’t it something that any internet retailer, big and small, knows as the first thing they’d have to do in order to sell anything? Of course, but this is Sony we’re talking about.
