Capital One Spark Business Card: Direct Link to $1,000 Offer

UPDATE! DEAD AS OF 11.18.17

Wow, that was fast. Congrats to those who got it!

I have a “lesser” affiliate $500 Capital One Spark Business Card offer, which I “unbolded” for the time-being. You’re welcome! 🙂

Per Doctor of Credit who broke the story in this Reddit thread, there is a new $1,000 bonus from the Capital One Spark Cash Business card with a $59 annual fee waived for the first year. For those new to the game — yes, you can apply for a business credit card even if you don’t have an official business (eBay or garage sale, freelance, or any kind of side gigs qualify). Use your Social Security number instead of the EIN number if you don’t have it, and choose Sole Proprietorship  when asked about the legal business structure.

Here are other Capital One “idiosyncrasies” you might want to know.

  1. Capital One sends a hard inquiry to all three credit bureaus.
  2. They are very sensitive to recent inquiries and churning, although there don’t seem to be any hard and fast rules, yet.
  3. They allow no more than 2 credit cards in 6 months, including business cards.

With all these caveats out of the way, this bonus is terrific, although the $10,000/3mths spending requirement is not.

Capital One was the bank that started it all

In 2011, Capital One Venture (and Alec Baldwin) went out with a huge TV promotion: they would double the number of miles you had accumulated with one of your eligible frequent flyer miles programs to the maximum of 100,000 miles. Since Capital One miles are “fake miles” (they are just cash back, in reality), that offer is very comparable to the bonus offered by the Capital One Business card today.

With one exception. Back then, the eye-popping spending thresholds of today were unheard of. The Venture promo required you to spend… $1,000 in 90 days. Oh, that sweet innocence of credit card issuers of yesteryear.

$1,000 is a lot of dough

Go for this card if you stand a good chance of getting it. It’s worth the risk. Even though you have to manufacture $10,000 (use Plastiq or Venmo if all else fails), it’s still worth it. Push comes to the shove, you will pay a 2.5% – 3% fee, which brings your total haul down to $840 – $900, because the card will earn you 2% per dollar.

If spending $10,000 is too rich for your blood, there is a smaller Capital One Spark Business credit card $750 offer after spending $7,500 in 3 months.

I’m not applying, but my cousin Timmy is

Here is a cautionary tale of how bad it is to be lazy. I applied for Capital One Spark Business years ago. Got my $500 bonus. Have used the card… almost never (my version is a no-annual-fee 1.5X card, and there are better options out there). But instead of canceling the card, I just kept it in the sock — and here we go. Can’t apply. Will, however, cancel the card and see how long this offer lives.

Timmy, on the other hand, has never had a business relationship with Capital One, and even though his side business doesn’t produce huge income, he’s gone easy on new applications in the last year or so. We’re hopeful.

 Recap

Great bonus! Read the Reddit thread first. Then apply if you stand a good chance of getting it.
